Pergamum it is a special city, a unique example in all Asia. Historically Pergamum was the capital of the greatest kingdom that existed in this
region. The city is situated 100 km north of Izmir. Pliny The Elder the famous Roman historian stated about it: "By far the most famous city in all
Asia". The reasons behind this fame is simple: when John wrote his letter, Pergamum had been a capital city for nearly four
hundred years.
After the mythical era, the one surrounded by several legends, Pergamum has been the theater for different cultures, ranging from those of the Stone and Bronze Ages until the Archaic and Classical Periods. Among the temples, squares, alleys and agora’s, we are going to visit the Asclepion Sanctuary, the most famous medical center of the ancient times and it was devoted to Asclepion, the god of medicine. It was constructed in the course of one century and world-known medical scholars, like Hippocrates and Galenus, were born in Pergamum and worked right here.
Nearby we are going to see the huge Zeus Altar and the Parchment Library. They are considered the most brilliant works of Art of the fourth and third century B.C. in Anatolia. The Parchment Library housed the most famous selection of book of that time, written on a type of treated lamb and goat skins. This process was invented right here in Pergamum, when the rulers of Ptolemean Egypt export the Egyptian papyrus sheets to Pergamum. The word "parchment" itself came from the name of this city and in other languages is even more obvious (Pergament in German, pergamena in Italian, pergamino in Spanish and so on).
We will also see magnificent buildings of this period like the Temple of Athena and those of Demeter and Dyonisos.
After the end of the tour we will drive you back to your hotel in Izmir city or Selcuk.
