Notre Dame's Island with Sainte Chapelle and Marie Antoinette's prison
Discover the heart of Paris
About this experience
Meet the heart of Paris on this 2.45-hour walking tour.
Explore the Ile de la Cité, the legendary Shakespeare & Company bookstore and the outside of Notre Dame Cathedral.
Be amazed by the proficiency of her 13th-century builders: Notre Dame endured the devastating fire of April 15, 2019, and a new page of her book is being written today as we visit. You will also enjoy the skip-the-line ticket to enter the Sainte Chapelle and visit the final prison of Marie Antoinette - the Conciergerie.
Did you know that, on the river Seine, there are two little islands and that Paris was founded on one of them? It's called Ile de la Cité. Join our local and passionate guide for a fascinating walking tour of this fascinating island, where you will find the most impressive medieval architecture in Paris.
We'll start our experience on the Left Bank, in the Latin Quarter, where scholars and intellectuals used to live and hang around since the foundation of Sorbonne University in the 13th Century.
We'll pass by the famed bookstore Shakespeare & Company, meeting place for the literary myths of the 'Lost Generation' - Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Gertrude Stein, and many others - who made Paris both their headquarter and the artistic crossroads of the world.
Then we will meet the majestic gothic structure of Notre Dame Cathedral. Built in the 13th century, this magnificent church has recently survived a huge fire, yet she is still standing proudly as the emblem of the city. You will learn everything about this cathedral, right now, when everyone in the world is talking about it and giving their, uninformed, opinion.
You will get to know the insights about its construction, the glorious past and the many "rise and fall" Notre Dame went through, including the tale of the famous Hunchback.
Then we will have a short walk through the lovely flower market to the Sainte Chapelle, home to some of the best-preserved and most astonishing stained glass in the world.
Built in the thirteen century by the King Saint Louis, almost the entire walls are covered by exceptional colored glass windows.
Once again you will have the privilege to skip the long queues, and your professional guide will show you how to read the stories on these centuries-old treasures, as you admire the extraordinary multi-colored light overwhelming the interiors of the building.
Our last stop is at the Conciergerie. It was originally a medieval palace but it became famous as the prison and last home of Queen Marie Antoinette during the French Revolution. You will admire the cells where the prisoners were retained, including the restricted cell of Marie Antoinette, where she was imprisoned until she was executed in 1793.
You will love strolling through the streets of this delightful island with your guide, listen to the fascinating stories of its long history.
Do not miss this chance: visit the heart of Paris.
