The twin temples were originally carved out of the mountainside in the 13th century BC, during the 19th dynasty reign of the Pharaoh Ramesses II, in order to witness the greatness of the King and his beloved Queen Nefertari.
In order to avoid the flooding, after the building of the Aswan High Dam on the Nile River and creation of Lake Nasser, all the archaeological site has been relocated in every single detail on an artificial hill high above the Aswan High Dam reservoir.
This huge operation, unique at its time, in 1968, took place under the attentive supervision of UNESCO.
This is meant to be of the greatest challenges of archaeological engineering in history, letting us the possibility to still enjoy this marvelous view today.
