Explore Matera with this 2hour walking tour of Sassi. This unique city in the South of Italy is the European capital of culture for 2019, and Unesco site, for the cultural and natural heritage its preserves.
Discover this incredible human settlement, perfectly integrated into the natural landscape, where rocks and houses intersect to create a whole structure.
The Sassi offer visitors a lively example of how the ancient populations inhabited the Region since the Paleolithic era.

The meeting point will be Church of Purgatory in Via Ridiola, the principal route of the town already in the XVIII century,
built between 1725 and 1747 with the contribution of the fraternity of Purgatory and the civilians.
The tour continues towards the Sasso Caveoso, passing by and along the Museum Domenico Ridola, Lanfranchi's Palace and a Kengiro Azuma's sculpture "The drop".
Finally, we reach Pascoli Square, where we will have the chance to admire the energic landscape with its cultural, historical and touristic uniqueness.

From the square, we will follow the panoramic and tortuous route, made up by stairs and little alleys, to finally reach the Madonna of Idris, in St.Peter's Square.
The Cave-House typically furnished where it is hosted the museum dedicated to the rural population, narrates the reality of the book "Christ Stopped at Eboli".
Afterwards you will encounter the cave church, the historic winery of the 1700s and the calvary locations of the "The Passion of Christ" in Mel Gibson's movie.

During the walk, you will have the time to taste typical specialties from Lucania: starting from the well-known and tasteful Matera Bread, to the savory D.O.C Wine "Aglianico del Vulture", to the good Crusci Peppers to finish with the original Extra Virgin Olive Oil from Materan hills.
