Visit the Catacombs of Rome in a small group of 12 people and descend into the dungeons of Rome underground with a specialised guide. This tour includes the stunning Catacombs of Domitilla, the Basilica of St Clement with a buried temple of Mithras, and the Capuchin Crypt of Via Vittorio Veneto. Explore the Underground Rome in a small group led by an expert guide.

Rome’s catacombs extend for miles and miles underground and most of this intricate maze is still unexplored. We have designed a tour that covers thousands of years in history in an itinerary spanning from the exploration of the catacombs of Domitilla, where the first followers of Jesus in Rome used to gather, to the visit of unique underground places such as St Clement's Basilica and the buried temple of Mithras. You will also visit the Crypt of the Capuchin Friars, with its walls and ceilings covered with human bones.

Domitilla's Catacombs are among the oldest and probably the most extensive catacombs in the Eternal city. They extend underneath a property that once belonged to the imperial family of the Flavians, whose founder, emperor Vespasian, is most famous for having started the building of the Colosseum in AD 70. His grandniece Domitilla became a Christian and was later persecuted for her faith. The catacombs taking her name are the largest and better kept Christian burial sites in Rome. Its 2nd-century frescoes and the unique basilica built at the entrance of the labyrinth make this complex just astonishing to visit. As a privilege granted to our trusted company, we will enter the site with our own selected guides.

After visiting Domitilla's catacombs you will see (car transfer is included in the price) the mysterious crypt of the Capuchin monks. Run by Franciscan friars for more than 500 years, this church has walls and ceilings covered and decorated with skulls and bones of the deceased friars. It is a really stunning and emotional experience that leaves most first-time and returning visitors breathless.

Finally, you will go down underneath the famous Basilica of St Clement — a medieval church built on top of an older basilica now buried underground, that was in turn built on top a pagan temple, a secret place dedicated to the god Mithras. Here the affiliates of this gnostic sect used to gather for their service. You will see how Christianity was able to assimilate the pagan culture to bend it to its own goals. You will be left in astonishment as we descend three levels underground St Clement’s Basilica, in the bowel of the earth to learn about the first steps of the first Christians.

Join our small group tour of Rome underground today, and visit the Catacombs of Domitilla, St Clement's Basilica, the Romanesque Basilica under St Clement, the Hidden Temple of Mithras, the Crypt of the Capuchin Friars. The real Rome is under your feet!
