We will Santander towards Potes (capital of Liébana region) at 9:00 am. To arrive there we will cross the impressive gorge of the Hermida (a set of narrow gorges along the river Deva).

Once in Potes, you will have the opportunity to do a short walking Pilgrimage to the Monastery of Santo Toribio (at 3 km from the village). The estimated time to arrive on foot to the Monastery from Potes is 45 minutes.

The Monastery of Santo Toribio is together with Santiago, Rome and Jerusalem the only one in the world that keeps a piece of the cross in which Jesus Christ died and one of the four places of Christianity where the jubilee or forgiveness of sins can be obtained through pilgrimage. 2017 was a Jubilee Year and the Door of Forgiveness was open. The door is closed now and will remain closed for the next 5 years until the next Jubilee Year.

It was Holy Toribio of Astorga, custodian of the relics of Jesus Christ in Jerusalem, who transferred a piece of the Cross to Astorga, the city of which he was Bishop. This relic was transferred then to Liebana by Christians who wanted to keep it safe from the Muslims who had initiated the invasion of the peninsula.

The importance of this Monastery was already known in the Middle Ages, when the pilgrimage to the Monastery to see the Lignum Crucis was a must visit for the Pilgrims who went to Santiago de Compostela. In addition, this place was in itself a place of pilgrimage, with its own identity due to the curative and miraculous powers attributed to the remains of the Saint of Astorga and to the Relic itself.

The pilgrimage that we will carry out is the shortest possible route, in fact, it is the last part of the Lebaniego Way prior to arriving at the Monestry.
At 12:00 we will attend the mass of the pilgrim.
After the mass, we will visit the chapel of San Miguel from where you will enjoy beautiful views of Picos de Europa. We will then go back to Potes to eat there. The menú included is a “Cocido Lebaniego” (a stew of chickpeas and meat). This is the perfect local dish to recharge your batteries. However, should you prefer another menú, please let us know previously.

After lunch, we will give you some free time to visit Potes and do some shopping.
During the afternoon, we will visit San Sebastian de Garabandal, a small village in the mountains where there were appearances of Virgin Mary from 1961 to 1965. You will have the opportunity here to walk up to the "Sanctuary of Los Pinos", the main place where the Virgin appeared.
