An expedition in the Venetian Lagoon to visit Murano, Burano, and Torcello islands that are best known for handcrafts: Murano is famed for glass its glass factory, Burano is famous for the laces while Torcello is famed for being the first island in Venice to have a cathedral. To get to Murano, sailboats pass through San Giorgio Maggiore, San Servolo, San Lazzaro degli Armeni, and Sant’Elena Gardens. Murano has nine islets separated by a wide canal. The history of the island for glass blowing dates back to 1291 when glass artisans transferred their kilns from the ancient city center for fear of fire outbreaks. Murano’s economy has over the years relied on glass manufacturing. Murano was the leading glass center in Europe during XV and XVI centuries.
The expedition includes visiting a glass factory to watch experienced glass blowers at work.
Some of the island’s palaces and churches such as SS. Maria e Donato Church best exemplifies the Veneto-Byzantine style are a clear manifestation of its magnificence. The Basilica also has another puzzling fact: the apse and the Canal are in opposite directions. The mosaics in the interior are paved with ornamental motifs dating back to 1140 when the basilica was constructed.
Murano’s forefront is a brick-walled island with cypresses; San Michele is Venice’s cemetery which dates back to XIX century where reputable persons including Stravinsky Diaghilev have been laid to rest. The cemetery’s iconic church built in XV century by Mauro Codussi is visible from a distance. The church was the first to be decorated with Istria’s white marble.
Visitors will also stop at Torcello. The island was founded from V- VI centuries and played a major role in the first Venetian civilization with palaces and churches being its dominant structures. At present, the island is a rich archeological preservation of its bright past including the magnificent Byzantine Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and Church of Santa Fosca which had a unique Byzantine interior.
Burano Island will be the final stop during the Torcello boat tour. The island is among the lagoon’s most picturesque locations: it mimics Venice with all houses painted in bright colors. Lacework in the island dates back to the XVI century when it was the most developed and well known in Europe.
